What Is Diabetes?
Its really a myth how diabetes affects a person. Is it because a person takes in lot of sugar, or is it because the person takes in less amount of sugar? Diabetes is not caused by taking too much sugar. Diabetes can be diagnosed in few ways, most commonly with a fasting blood glucose test or oral glucose tolerance test.
Diabetes works like this… the foods we eat are broken into glucose. Glucose is nothing but a form of sugar in blood. Glucose is really essential to body. These glucose flows into the bloodstream after digestion. When it flows through the bloodstream these glucose is being used by cells for growth and energy. In order for glucose to enter the cells a hormone called insulin must be present. Insulin is being produced by the pancreas. Based on the level of glucose pancreas adjusts itself. People with diabetes cannot use glucose in their body for energy. A survey has revealed that almost 7 percent of United States population is being affected by this disorder. 7 percent roughly comes to 21 million.
After an 8 hour fast if the blood glucose level is 126 milligrams per deciliter or more. This test is called Fasting blood glucose. After drinking a beverage which contains 75 grams and when tested, if the blood glucose level reaches 200 or more. This test is called Oral glucose tolerance test. Diabetes is one of the main diseases across the globe which is responsible for death and disability. In long term diabetes affects various parts of the body. It often leads to blindness, kidney failure heart disease etc. Diabetes is not contagious, how ever it passes from one generation to another. Previously there were not any cures for diabetes but now days it can be kept under control by taking pills and insulin shots.
